Weather Policy
Tulsa Run Event Alert System (EAS) & Weather Preparedness The safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and community is our top priority. The Tulsa Run uses the Event Alert System (EAS) — a color-coded system that communicates weather and course conditions before and during the race.
EAS Levels
Low (Green): Good conditions — enjoy the event and stay alert
Moderate (Yellow): Less-than-ideal conditions — slow down and prepare for possible changes
High (Red): Potentially dangerous — slow down, follow official instructions, and consider stopping
Extreme (Black): Event paused or canceled — follow directions from race officials immediately EAS levels will be displayed at the start and finish, along the course, and on official Tulsa Run communication channels.
Lightning and Thunderstorms
If lightning is detected within eight miles of the course, the EAS will move to Red or Black, depending on severity.
• The race may be delayed or paused.
• Participants should seek shelter in nearby buildings or vehicles.
• The event will not resume until 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike.
• Flooding or unsafe roads may lead to course changes or cancellation.
Heat and Humidity
The Tulsa Run monitors the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and other environmental factors. As heat and humidity rise, the EAS may shift to Yellow or Red. Participants should reduce their pace, hydrate frequently, and follow race official instructions.
Rain and Course Conditions
Light rain will not delay or cancel the event. However, heavy rainfall, flooding, or unsafe surfaces may lead to course modifications, delays, or cancellation.
Communication
EAS updates will be announced through: • Public address systems at the start and finish
• The Tulsa Run website and social media channels
• Text or email alerts (if applicable)
• Course flag stations and volunteer communication
Preparation
• Dress appropriately: Wear moisture-wicking, layered clothing suitable for the forecast.
• Hydrate early: Drink fluids before and during the race.
• Stay informed: Check official channels for updates.
• Be flexible: Safety decisions may occur quickly; be prepared to adjust as needed.
