Downriver Kayak/Canoe Race

This race will be a time trial format on a Class II-III stretch of the Animas River from the 29th St. put-in through Santa Rita Park. Participants will be started in three-minute intervals racing against the clock for the fastest time in their category! Start times will be staggered and assigned at the athlete safety meeting at the 29th St put-in. Athletes are required to be at the starting line at least 30 minutes prior to their assigned start time for a mandatory safety meeting. Mandatory Safety Equipment: -PFD -Helmet -Protective footwear -Appropriate attire for spring run-off conditions such as a dry-gear, paddling jacket or wetsuit Equipment will be reviewed at check-in. The race director has the right to refuse any non-conforming equipment (i.e. bicycle helmets, nylon spray skirts, etc.). Athletes must be able to self-rescue in whitewater conditions and are responsible for their own safety. Event organizers and whitewater rescue teams present on the course are not responsible for equipment rescue or removal from the course. Shuttle: Athletes are responsible for providing their own shuttle between the 29th St. put-in and Santa Rita Park. Event organizers suggest using either the lower Santa Rita Park take-out or the take-out behind 4Corners Riversports as limited parking is available at Santa Rita Park during the festival. Acceptable Boats: Open Boat Division – Men & Women: Boats may not exceed 9’ in length. All boats will be measured at the start of the race. Youth Boat Division – Boys & Girls: Boats may not exceed 9’ in length. All boats will be measured at the start of the race. Carbon/Long Division – Men & Women: Boats may not exceed 12’5” in length. Sit-on-top kayaks are NOT allowed. No custom or after-production modifications of the exterior length, dimensions, or hull shapes of boats allowed.
